A Day in the Middle School

Each school day begins at 8:00 a.m., when Middle School students and faculty gather for Morning
Meeting or, on Wednesday, for Advisor Meetings. Classes begin at 8:35 a.m. and range in length from 45 to 90 minutes in each academic discipline. Art, music and technology classes are included in each student’s schedule. All sixth graders take a sample of French, Spanish and Mandarin during the course of the academic year. All seventh graders take Latin. Eighth grade students may continue to study Latin or choose to instead begin French, Spanish or Mandarin.

There is a daily mid-morning break, and at midday, lunch is provided in the Cameron Mann Dining Hall, followed by a short recess. In the afternoon, seventh and eighth graders have sports, while fifth and sixth grade students have physical education classes scheduled at different times throughout the school day. Interscholastic competition begins in seventh grade, and games are scheduled after classes, on weekday afternoons. Dismissal is at 3:25 p.m.

Fifth and sixth grade students should expect to have approximately 20 to 30 minutes of homework per subject, per night. Seventh and eighth grade students should expect approximately 30 to 40 minutes of homework per subject, per night. From time to time, homework assignments will be given in art, music and computer classes. These times are merely guidelines, and will vary according to long-term assignments, quizzes and tests, and the rate at which individual students work. Middle School students are, of course, still learning time management and study skills as well as content.

Each student has a faculty advisor. The advisor plays a central role in overseeing the school life of each advisee, providing a forum where a student may go for help, advice and encouragement. The advisor is a liaison between the parent and the school on academic and social matters. Advisors meet with their group daily and individually with students as needed.
